The West Linn-Wilsonville School District has officially voted to keep our schools open, but the fight isn't over. Tonight, at the district office at 6 p.m., we stand at a crossroads. Teacher jobs are on the line.
The district plans to cut 30 elementary teachers, 11 middle school teachers, and 17 high school teacher’s, gutting our classrooms while administrative cuts remain a mystery. They say some reductions will come from administration, yet they refuse to say how many. Instead, they bury these cuts under vague categories like “purchased services” and “paraeducators”.
How is it that they can calculate exact numbers for teachers but not for administrators?
Another $2 Million Magically Appears
On Monday, the district will announce they’ve “Found” another $2 million in the budget. Sound familiar? That number keeps growing—just as we predicted. And make no mistake, it’s still not the final number.
For months, they told us that closing a school would save $1.4 million, the equivalent of 11 teaching positions. Now, with $2 million suddenly available, will they reverse at least 15 teaching cuts?
Or will they pocket the money, increase class sizes, and continue down this destructive path?
Hold Them Accountable—They Work for Us
Last year, we passed a levy to protect small class sizes. They have a legal and moral obligation to uphold that promise. If they fail, they should expect that we will repeal the levy.
Follow the Money—Administrative Costs Are Out of Control
Since 2018, administrative costs have skyrocketed 71% on declining enrollment. Meanwhile, K-5 spending has grown just 16%.
Until the district “right-sizes”administration to match K-5 growth at 16% above 2018 levels, not one teacher should lose their job.
If they hand out a single pink slip before cutting their own bloated expenses, they will have betrayed their true interests —protecting themselves, not our children. Until they put students back at the center of their decisions, we will hold them to the fire.
Chaos & Corruption—It’s Time for Change
This district is embroiled in chaos. From the attempted small school closures to the Oppenlander debacle, they have shown us that the community does not come first. Our children do not come first.
Our tax dollars are just a paycheck to them.
But now, it’s election season.
This is our moment. We must elect leaders who will act boldly, start fresh, and steer this district toward a future that serves students — not bureaucrats.
